DIABETES MELLITUS

Our service offering | PDF diabetes mellitus

There are two main groups of Diabetes mellitus: type 1 diabetes (approximately 400.000 people in Germany are affected) and type 2 diabetes (approximately 7 million are affected in Germany, with an increasing trend).

The Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. The body's own immune system, which primarily serves to defend against pathogenic germs, suddenly turns against the insulin-producing cells of the body for reasons that are still unclear pancreas and destroys it. As a result, insulin production stops within a few days to weeks. Type 1 diabetes often develops in childhood and adolescence.

The Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease that results in elevated blood sugar levels. These cause long-term damage to blood vessels and nerves, which in turn can cause numerous organ problems. Treatment may require lifestyle changes, medication and, if necessary, insulin.

In contrast to type 1 diabetes Type 2 diabetes not the result of an insulin deficiency, but one insulin resistance. This means that the cells no longer respond adequately to insulin, so that the hormone cannot transport the sugar into the cells. Blood sugar levels rise. To compensate for this, the pancreas initially produces larger amounts of insulin. If this is no longer enough to overcome insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes develops. The main causes of type 2 diabetes are hereditary predisposition, obesity and lack of exercise. While type 1 diabetes tends to develop at a younger age, type 2 diabetes often only develops at an advanced age (retirement age). However, increasingly younger people are also developing this disease.

The most important secondary diseases make Heart attack, Stroke, circulatory problems in the legs and even amputation, Kidney weakness up to the need for dialysis and Retinal damage of the eye with possible blindness. They are often referred to as “late damages”. Less well known are nerve damage with sensory disturbances in the feet, unsteady gait, digestive disorders/constipation and erectile dysfunction, as well as wound healing problems and more frequent infections.

Diabetes complications can occur at an early stage of diabetes - often even as soon as it begins Prediabetes (a pre-diabetes stage).

The Therapy The chronic disease diabetes is a life's work. It includes lifestyle changes, weight loss, training, treatment with tablets and other medications and possibly also therapy with insulin.

Type 2 diabetes can be diagnosed early using blood and urine tests. One early diagnosis is important because the disease usually develops slowly without symptoms over several years. Organ damage can already occur here. The earlier the diagnosis of diabetes or prediabetes (early form with impaired carbohydrate metabolism) is diagnosed, the gentler the therapy is. Which preventive examinations make sense depends on the family history and the individual risk factors. This will be determined in the initial interview
